Note: He and his father worked in the "Iron Stone" mines at Brotton, England , a nd wishing to better themselves, came to America, circa 1883, land ing in P hiladelphia at the foot of Chestnut Street. They walked up Ch estnut and Br oad and entrained for Antrim, Tioga Co., PA, where ther e were bituminous c oal mining operations. Here he obtained employmen t in the mine, and in sla ck times worked in the woods as a Bark Peele r (hemlock bark was used in ta nning). Here he became acquainted with Amy (Fowler) Montgomery, who had pa rted from and received a divorce f rom James Montgomery on account of incom patibility.
